The Intimacy of Being Understood

I think there's something really rare about feeling truly seen by someone, even in all your complexities. Not just in the obvious ways, like compliments, although there is something unforgettable about receiving a compliment that feels like it's genuinely from the heart, and truly believed by the person who's telling it to you.

Not the casual kind people give when they think they should, but the kind that you don't expect, that really land with you. When they aren't just to impress you, but to make you see that maybe you are worth noticing. Those certain compliments settle in your heart, and quietly remind you of your worth when you forget it.

It's not just the compliments themselves, but also the way they make you feel. The smile that you can't help but let form after you think about it again, because it means that someone cared enough to notice something in you beyond the surface, and thought that you deserved to hear all the good things they're saying about you.

How that feels leaves an impact on you and comes back to you on days that you doubt yourself, because it's so rare to find people who see you with more than just their eyes, but also with their heart.

There's something beautiful about that connection, because those words and the truth behind them have the power to make someone feel like they're more than enough just as they are. When we feel seen I think it makes us a little more okay with who we are, because we feel accepted.

It's not just being praised for something you've done or being looked at, it's something deeper. It's a quiet kind of understanding and knowing. It means that someone has given you the comfort of being able to be your whole self and has let you show the complicated parts that you don't let any ordinary person see, like the things about you that you're a little scared to share and that you can't quite put into words, but you feel like you can show with no judgement nonetheless.

It's not every day that you find someone who sees you beyond what everyone else does, who notices beyond your front. Who knows all your quirks and embraces them and remembers the little things about you. Who doesn't hear but instead really listens, takes in your words and hears the thoughts you wouldn't usually say out loud. It's a gift to have someone take that time to want to know you.

When someone sees you like that you kind of don't forget it, because they've seen you for all the little things that make up you, and made it feel okay not to be perfect. It causes you to go beyond existing, but to be supported and recognised, and to feel alive and whole.

Being able to exist with someone who you don't need to change at all for but can still feel understood in your entirety. Someone who's genuinely interested, and who understands you in a way that's personal and deep, who gives you a warm reassurance by how comfortable you feel when you're with them.

People might not stay, but the memory of how they made you feel and treated you will, because they mattered so much, and each time you talked meant something.

Being seen is a quiet kind of intimacy that, even if it fades over time, sticks with you. Because when it's gone you know you'll miss the way conversations used to feel effortless, like you didn't have to try so hard to be understood. Like you could say a lot or not much at all, and someone got you.
